Readers' Feedback 2013-14

From: Brian Dear friends, Shortly after I retired several years ago, I took a one year subscription to your magazine. I had to swallow hard when I saw the price, but after having read a few excellent individual copies I thought it a good treat. I believed that the subscription had ended and it seems, if memory serves, that it had been some time since I had seen an issue. A couple of weeks ago I received some emails from you about a substantial charge and a reversal or reimbursement of that charge. I didn’t quite understand what was going on and put it out of my mind until I received a bill from one of my credit cards a few days ago with an eye popping charge. Maybe there was some fine print when I made the original subscription, but if there was something about automatic renewals I didn’t see it and wouldn’t have wanted it in any case. Frankly, I cannot afford the subscription to your magazine at the overseas rate, no matter how entertaining and informative the articles. I apologize if I overlooked something, but request that my subscription be terminated immediately and whatever portion possible of the charge be refunded to me. Thanks again. You have a great publication with the Hifi Critic. I just wish it was a more reasonable price here in the US, particularly for those of us in retirement. With best regards, Brian |

From: Mark Thank you Martin. I just discovered your publication after returning to hifi after a decade away. It is a great read and I've really enjoyed the issues that have been passed on to me from my dealer. I'm in process to order some back issues and subscribe to future volumes. Thank you in advance for your reply. Keep up the great writing. Mark |

From: Alexander Your thorough recent review of the Magico S-5 loudspeaker was very interesting to me. I wonder if you would be interested in reviewing the Magico S-3, probably more suited to smaller apartments. It would also be very interesting if you would consider reviewing the Magico Q-3. I think it would be very interesting to see how the least expensive loudspeaker of the Q-series compares to the most expensive loudspeaker of the S-series as there is only a small price difference between them. I would also like to thank you and your staff for always delivering a most interesting reading experience. Best regards, Alexander |

From: Nick Hi, I've just re-subscribed. The last back issue you sent was vol7 number 4. So could the subscription commence with the one following on please? I read and re-read your wise words and each issue is a kind of new thrill! Regards, Nick |

From: Ioannis Dear Martin I enjoy very much reading your magazine and I wouldn't like to miss it. I think that it is among the best if not THE best. However, paypal gives me only troubles. I don't know what is wrong with it or perhaps with me!? Best regards, Ioannis. |

From: Cornelis Hi Martin , I have been a subscriber since day 1 and have been of the opinion that it is the best hi-fi mag around. I have however, reached a stage whereby I am jumping off the upgrade band wagon having reached what to my ears is audio nirvana (LP12/Koetsu, dedicated mac mini, Devialet x2 (Martin shudders!) and Vivid Audio G1, in a dedicated and treated room). Also the state of the ever increasing spiral of high end pricing is turning me off (Art Dudley wrote an excellent article on this very topic in Stereophile). So with no planned purchasers for the medium term I have decided not to renew my subscription. A small contributing factor is that in my opinion the reviews of late have been of less relevance to me (I did not see the point of reviewing some horn loud speaker manufactured in Wales (if I recall)) and I am finding an increasing number of reviews of product that it is not available in South Africa (compared to the reviews in the first year which were mostly relevant). Don’t take this as criticism (or take it personally) it also has as much to do with the fact that I am stuck in the third world that is South Africa. I will miss the music reviews the most as I have found some gems through your magazine The only other mag I read is Stereophile but even then I find of late I read very few of the reviews - but at $12 via Zinio in the Apple App Store it matters not. If the pricing was not so ridiculous I would can that subscription too. The good news is that I am listening to more music than ever I wish you and the magazine all the best into the future Kind regards Cornelis |

From: Steen Hi Martin, received the Vol5 no. 1, and thanks you very much for the additional magazines. I was interested in Vol5 no. 1 to read your experience with the B&W 805 Diamond, and I got some good hints from the reading, which has improved my joy of the speakers – thanks for that. (spiking and lateral angle adjustments). Your magazines are truly worth studying! Very precise expressions in your tests, and OK measurements to support some of your statements. I will watch it for future benefits. Best regards, Steen |

From: Matt thanks for the reminder, I always enjoy the magazine and although I disagree with some of the cables/networks/stands subjectivism (in which you are hardly the worst offenders) I always appreciate the enthusiasm in the writing and the extensive coverage of speakers, headphones and turntables - stuff that moves I suppose! Subscription renewed. Warm regards Matt |

From: Rene USA PS Keep the good work going, I thoroughly enjoy the independence displayed in the magazine. I picked up a Stereoplay the other day, it becomes a difficult read in comparison! |

From: John Brighouse Moray Dear Sir I very much appreciate your magazine for its independence and advice, especially computer audio. As well as articles about equipment I do not want, and could not afford, I think you should continue to offer advice about system synergy with regards to ?real world? products. Your recommendations - from those I have been able to hear or purchased- seem spot on . Long may you run. Yours sincerely, John |

From: Kari Tormi Issue 1/Vol 7 is here. Many thanks for great support. Magazine looks very nice, feels good , and reminds me of "old" days - in a positive way. I've had guests visiting all evening, so before now I've not had possibility to read it. Will do it now. Kind regards from Helsinki, Kari Tormi 16th January 2013

From: Sorab Wadia Dear Martin, Just returned from a blissful winter break that was entirely media-free! Will resub immediately. All the best to you and everyone at HiFI Critic for a wonderful 2013. Since you are ad-free and I believe the single such high-end publication still alive and kicking, I know that all your subscribers appreciate the dedication and hard work you put into the magazine and hope that a prosperous year lies before you. I feel more than ever that the technological divide between expensive mid-fi products and genuine high-end products will widen this year. Ad-driven magazines will have to ignore the crucial differences as so much of the "high end" will have to remain at the enthusiast level technology-wise, no matter the price or level of sophistication. Fortunately for audio as an art we are at a point where advances in speakers, amplification (pre and power categories) and digital make the differences very obvious. It's the few manufacturers willing to undertake research and testing to transcend the parts sourcing, freelance circuit designing, and general recycling that seems to be so prevalent today. Digital is really going to be the divide. Things like swapping out DACs is obviously not the answer when jitter really needs to be subdued. I do hope the HiFiCritic will be the driving wedge in increasing that divide. Sorry for running on -- blame it on a luscious Rhone! Cheers, Sorab Wadia |
