A Linn USP for their current streamers is the inclusion of their space optimisation feature allowing the owner to programme for the ideal drive signals for the speaker locations in the room, for a more uniform bass, and potentially better stereo. Interestingly their site as of today still lists several preamps.
Six years ago Linn stopped making CD players, seeing the streamer as the music source of the future, nailing this by calling their streamers ‘DS players’. Now Linn have announced that their preamplifier production will cease. Their ongoing DSM line also includes preamp facilities, namely analogue inputs and volume control and thus the stand alone preamp at Linn is rendered redundant. Increasingly volume controls are present on many digital audio devices, app controlled making preamps redundant in many systems and it is likely that many audio manufactures will join Linn in this decision drop the ‘separates’ analogue preamp or control unit. Regarding apps this market is astounding and even though more than 90 % are free the global annual value is close to $35billion and with more than 0.6 billion app related jobs created in the EU alone. No wonder app control software has dived into the audio market.
