My mother has recently re-connected up her record player and is enjoying revisiting her old vinyl but a lot of it is quite filthy and really needs a good clean. As she is definitely not going to fork out for a record-cleaning machine can anyone recommend suitable cheap alternatives to get her collecion back into better shape?
Thanks

There are fluids that dont need a machine http://www.audioaffair.c...z15v2subACFcQKfAodRTZs5gOn an earlier post I mentioned using PVA or wood glue to clean them too http://www.ehow.com/how_...n-records-wood-glue.htmlPerhaps test this on a less valuable record first.............

So with the fluids do you just use a soft cloth to apply? Russ andrews used to sell a bath to go with their cleaning fluid but now don't so I can't work out how it is supposed to be applied.

A sensibly priced option whch works well is the Knosti Disco Anti-Stat cleaner which you can pick up from Amazon for £30.99 (most shops sell it for £45 or so). Its fluid works well, it comes with filters to clean the fluid out and reuse it (around 25 times depending on the records) and refills are readily available.
For the few really unbelievably dirty records which are still salvageable, find a HiFi dealer that does the record cleaning service. They're expensive (we charge £3.50 a record nowadays, but then we use a Keith Monks machine) so only use this service for cherished/grubby records. Well, I say that and yet I regularly get customers in having spent £2.50 on records in Oxfam and they trot straight to us for a clean! I don't get it, but they claim the clean really is that effective. I still think it's something to be reserved for particular records though... |

I have a higher labour-lower tech method-
I bath records in a solution of 90% water, 10% methylated spirits (this is household alcohol; I forget what you call it in the UK), plus a cap-full of car wash liquid (because it has no salt to scratch; do not use dishwashing liquid). I wipe the records with a microfibre cloth, but any soft cloth will do, rinse under a barely warm tap, and gently dry.
Cheap, easy, but not quick.
