The last post (there's lots of 'Dave's' in hi fi, must be an age thing. ) reminds me that I too bought a Koetsu Urushi after the 'Critic' reviews. So they clearly have some effect on me. In general I think you use them as 'seedcorn', planting ideas for future audition or consideration. Most of us are probably too wary to just buy on the basis of a review (although in this case at least two of us did on the basis of the Koetsu reviews!).
As for hifi journalism...you can't expect too much when people have to earn their living (I was a journalist, but a properly paid one.) HiFi journalism pays pitifully badly, magazines have to sell so they promote novelty and controversy.Which is where 'Critic' can score, because it is driven by informed enthusiasts and not the search for cash.
The other great example of that genre was Art Dudley's 'The Listener', a quirky, opionionated and rather wonderful magazine. For me, the best ther's ever been, because it saw the hobby as sheer fun.I'm sure 'Critic' will prove to have more stamina.

We love what we do and are grateful that you lot empower us to borrow, and sometimes buy when we can, gear which gives us pleasure and can be a rewarding challenge to evaluate.

We are driven by an abiding love of music and the never ending pursuit of still better sound quality.

Thankfully there are equally enthusiastic and committed audio designers ready to take us on, to challenge our preconceptions about how it should be done.

Oddly enough both speaking to Martin and reading articles have assisted me in not spending money on my HiFi. This may sound odd, but i was tempted to buy different mains cables and supports to the ones I have, but after loaning some cables, I heard slight improvements if any - money will be better spent on a new ring on my mains circuit. In addition to this I considered an acrylic Audio Works stand - thereby ditching my Townshend Seismic (air version) stand - again I was advised that at best the Audio Works would be a sideways step.

Most importantly I am finding that real improvements must be that, and I am developing far more confidence in my own judgement.

I was having a look through some back issues, and found an article dealing with Townshend Stella isolating speaker stands.

I have the same problem with bass going through the floor,so I will be trying them out soon.

Thanks again to the Hifi Critic team

Yes, Rega 1000, Townshend Allegri, Metrum , Koetsu Red , Tiger Paw , Cardas GR Speaker Wire, CJ 350 and others I have undoubtabley forgotten purchasing bought at least partly on critic's recommendation. I had never heard of the Metrum nor Allegri. Have my own opinions but just too expensive these day's to buy and try myself samples of everything I would like to hear. When good amps were a few hundred $ it was different.

My view is that a reviewer must consider it personally, could be buy it ? and could he or she recommend it to a friend?

you must decide whether it is recommendable otherwise the article is a simply a descriptive cop out .

How many of those do you see in other publications?
