I don't know if that would be possible to do, or of interest to many, but I've often wondered about the effect of the cartridge body on the sound. Koetsu, for example, has a range of stone bodies (at various expensive price points), that all share the same innards as far as I know. It might also be the same with their wood bodied cartridges, but I am not sure. It would be nice to test a range of cartridges with the same generator/cantilever/stylus and compare the effect on the sound of the different body materials.

Hereticallly speaking here could be more variation between the build of the generators than the effects of the different bodies.
Cartridges samples can be less consistent than loudspeakers, and variation for the latter is now rarely spoken about or admitted by manufacturers.
the BBC and then KEF were majors on consistency, pair matching, and the latter aspect has clear connection with aspects of sound quality.

MartinC Interesting. The stone cartridges start at around $5k (if I am not mistaken) and end at around $20k (US list prices), but, as far as I know, all share exactly the same innards. The price difference would be totally related to the body material, so basically, one would be paying all that extra for cosmetics!

meridian man wrote:I'd like to see a non bias naim review! Ouch ! we are free of bias , I hope , and love some meridians, indeed the DSP 7200 was a rave, the 8082i got a top rating and we even liked the 350W wall mount speaker: all are in the Awards so how less biased can we get? MartinC

We don't like bright, irritating sounds and if you had read the copy you will know it is so Myself, Malcolm , Paul , Chris , and Tony are in general agreement on this. Cheap throw away comments are not helpful, lets have some facts, or is it just a general moan? MartinC

If you don't like bright sound be glad you don't live over here! I have been using British speakers since the mid 60s and mostly British electronics since the same time because I find them less bright than others. Most of the systems I hear over here are too bright for my taste, I tend to like mine a little more distant in perspective than many apparently do. I haven't had a Naim since the days of the 160 but have only stayed away because of cable issues.

perhaps vintage equipment. A review on a pair of Voight corner horns with pre war energised drivers (field coil) would be right up Paul's street.

Yes, or how about a nice Thorens TD124 up against a modern LP12. Or a Rogers A75/A100 amplifier against a modern Cyrus 8. That sort of thing - be interesting to see where progress has been made, if any. Edited by user 11 December 2009 00:47:32(UTC)

I have a well sorted Richard Alan A21. How would that stand up against the modern Sugden A21?

Martin Colloms wrote:General to this thread HIFICRITIC AWARDS
Paul and I have been mulling over whether to review our product ratings over the past issues and publish in Vol4 no 4 upcoming an awards feature. We decided to go ahead . Nothing pretentious you understand, no gala dinner or invitation for manufacturers to support the project ,
simply a reasoned listing of good performing product which has gone through our listening rooms
There are three categories:
'Audio Excellence'
exceptional 'audiophile' sound and performance , price no object
'Best Buy'
fine performance for price over a wide price range
'Recommended'
not so much an also ran , but product which scored well on listening and lab test and in an alternative system might well be the better choice.
After publication I will post this feature on the web site.
Martin C Good idea, and in particular to keep this up to date on the site

Mirroring a few comments above I too like to read about vintage kit and how it relates to and works in a modern system and indeed an all vintage system. I too have an interest in vintage and unusual speaker systems.

I think Martin misunderstood my earlier suggestion concerning CJ ("classic" and other) and G. Croft. It was a suggestion to review these equipment, not to include them in the "Best" list.

A friend of mine who builds and restores tube gear deals with this company. This DAC looks like it might be a good deal; I am currently trying out a V-DAC and if I keep it will get a Little Pinkie power supply. But this looks like an alternative. Any thoughts? http://cgi.ebay.com/Vala...3efa827622#ht_1462wt_736Also saw the review in Hi FI News of the Quadral Aurum Titan VII, which looked promising. The aluminum cones combined with a ribbon tweeter gave me a moment of nostalgia for my Leak 3090s, which I now realize I never had the proper room for. Edited by user 13 December 2009 18:08:19(UTC)

HMMM
a bit deep for this late in my working day............
of course I must like this products I like or they won't get a good report .
I hope I like them because they are good and not just because I like them.
The latter possibility leads me away from reviewing and towards madness.
But maybe reviewers are mad too try and do what they do in any case.
