I needed an iPad after the LINN loan unit went back and I thought Apple iPad 2.

This last weekend went crazy in London for the first marketing of the device and within hours all the big stores and stockists had run out.

So I thought: Where is the least fashionable pace to buy an up-market iPad 2?

Argos !

Went on line on that Saturday morning, loads of stock, delivered the day after, carriage free!

Now I am loading the music control apps to run the server audio sytem.

Meanwhile there are three great audio test and control apps which I will report on soon

EQu by Elephantcandy is a fascinating touch and drag frequency response bender which allows you see see what your speaker or replay device

might sound like if these simple to apply corrections were made

SPL Meter by Studio 6 Digital is an elegant and beautifully rendered precision sound level meter worth having if only to admire

Pocket RTA HD is an elegant audio toolbox with generators, and Fourier and RTA analysers including 1/6th octave.

The on-board wide directivity mic can also be calibrated for response and for absolute sensitivity if you have access to a reference.

Finally if you want to explore music and sound reproduction the Garage Band app is an absolute hoot. This sophisticated and versatile set of keyboard

synthesisers and instruments has great subtlety and versatility. It is priced so low that I am convinced it is being marketed as a loss leader to help drive the sales of pods and pads.

Here I am a newbe, perhaps more experienced Critic readers can guide us down this path?

My manager has an iPad1 and has played Garage Band via Bluetooth'd (I think) Chord Gem into a big system. Sounded like a quality full size drum kit!

wow. It controls or stream to the music system, does spl, fft, and has a calibrate-able mic, perhaps I should bin off my CD player and Mlssa and just get an ipad to design speakers!

all these mod cons, you'll be twittering next martin. :-)

There is a small catch on the audio measurement

analogue line in shares with the mic feed and has a rumble and 'breath' filter -6dB at 150Hz, 2nd order : you could equ/cal to 100Hz at a pinch

In theory the pair of 2nd order input filter 1uF caps , first analogue I/C, could be replaced with 10Uf to get -6dB at 15Hz but I would not want to open the device

Otherwise I will try a USB ( via the camera adaptor) stereo ADC/DAC eg the Griffin Imic to provide a full digital/ analogue I/O for the analyser

NAIM app out April 1, no fooling

and free!

and does control the NAIM UnitiServe! Nice graphics now on the iPad

getting ready for the UnitiServe, Ndac-XPS review as a streamer combo for HD audio.

( btw our first Ndac review missed HD sources and only operated as a CD DAC)

I read that Damon Albarn mastered the new gorillas album on his Ipad.

I tried the Griffin iMic AD/DA usb converter and it did connect via the camera USB adapter but did not feel to confident about the results.

Amazon kindly credited the sale and I replaced it with a Behringer UCA222 ( about £27) which has the advantage of strong RCA connectivity, and also synchronised with the iPad 2. Responses, noise and distortion look promising .

Apple rate their 'non USB' current output for dongles at 20 mA and the UCA Burr Brown chip says it takes 50mA or so but the pad synced up anyway

there will be a mildly shortened battery life as the UCA could take 250 mW

I found you needed to start the iPad , start the app and then connect the dongle

ADPRO-IPAD2-BLACK
Manufacturer: Advanced Pro

I was pleasantly surprised to find this £30 iPad 2 case with integral multi angle stand actually performs exactly as advertised and claimed .

The on sleep / off magnetic interface also works as does the secure magnetic hasp.

Full port, audio, and camera functionality is preserved.

As an update? How do these apps perform on the iPad 3?
