I have my Apogee Duetta Signatures up again for the first time in years [one needed repair]. They still have many virtues but I am not modivated to change from my Spendor or GamuT cones. My room is probably too small for them to do their best.

Active is of course a loudspeaker technology, and I am on my third such model in four weeks .

Active is not a guarantee of quality but when done well, the bass in particular is of a quality out of proportion to size and price.

Also the active crossovers , together with good diffraction countermeasures , can offer superb off axis behaviour even in the vertical plane ,

ie the control of the drivers and overall phase integration seems rather better.

Some pro monitors are also incredible value for money..........

Hi
Full-range drivers with DSP & active bass for me.
I have used Lowther Acousta , with DBX and REL subwoofers.
Currently Cambridge Audio Minx min 21, Harman Karman 990 DSP amp and REL Subwoofer.
Planning in 6 months time to for TRK kit speakers, with intent to later go active with them, using the HK990 amp and A.N. other amp for the bass drivers.

Both the Lowthers & Cambridge Audio Minx need crossover set to 160Hz, as both SUB and full range drivers are at there limits of the DSP being able to balance outputs.

A bit more a of a spirit of adventure would do us lot no harm. Hard to get hold of, but try a decent pair of 'full range' field coil drivers (with battery power supply preferably) in a first rate horn. I think some of you will get a real surprise. And stuff like Voxativ is now getting pretty full-range too. The whole cone in a box thing is essentially a response to economics and domestic demands, not sound quality.

Paul M is planning to review the all singing Voxativ for the upcoming issue . All £45,000 of it!

In truth there are many ways of killing the loudspeaker design cat

all are compromises of one sort and another, and what is out there,

at the more competitive prices ,

has arisen by natural selection ........

pleasing more people more of the time!

This, market success, is the final arbiter of those technology and quality compromises.

Every technology has strengths and weaknesses

and the choice may often be down to individual taste

not a clear win of one over another.

Now that you are doing some small pro monitors could you do a digital one , like Genelec 8260a or Neumann KH 120d ( not out yet, i think ) ?

I'm pleased that PM is going to review the big Voxativ speakers. I think full-range field coils have a great deal to offer. It will be intriquing to read PM's views in due course.
As for the very high price of such speakers....this seems to have become the 'norm' among certain high end manufacturers, not least Magico. Wilson and lately, Sonus Faber. There are plenty of others asking crazy prices too.A great shame because they are pricing the vast majority of listeners out of the game..I don't think it is really about 'progress' and 'trickle down' either. Just about money from a tiny, wealthy, elite. No long term future in that.

There is more to this question than is set down. Preferences surely depend upon the nature of the music played. Panels are unsurpassed for classical music reproduction whereas boxes are perfectly adequate for smaller ensembles and pop groups where sound-stage precision and detail are less important than 'Wham, Bham, Slam' and tonsolitic female vocals.

I will never have a box speaker in my house again except to prop up a few books...

Well I was just playing Eugen Jochum's Carmina Burana now available in HiRes and it made me think " never panels again "
