Happy or not with it?

I am happy. Its much the same looking but better. The look is more clear and easy on the eye. Thank you for the spell checking. Just a well done really.

I'm glad Daniel sorted out the mailing gremlins, I was working with him on that.

I seem to have another minor gremlin, presumably to do with cookies. with the "old" forum, I could login and tick "REMEMBER ME" and I wouldn't have to log in again for weeks. Since the upgrade, every time I restart the computer, I seem to be back as "guest" again. So the cookies don't seem to be persistent enough. Hardly earth shattering, but a bit annoying. Anyone else tripping over this?

This behaviour will almost certainly be OS & browser-dependent, so for the record I'm on well-patched XP running Firefox 10.0.2 with AdBlockPlus to keep the crap down...

Hi Pete, cookie authentication is getting reset once or twice a day due to our host recycling our application pool. I hope to have this sorted out soon.

Constructive suggestion: Another slight annoyance, don't know if this is a forum software config option or not...

On the front page, there's a list of the last 5 posts in the forum. Oftentimes, as this is a low-traffic forum, that list encompasses all the posts I want to see. However, if I click the links, I get taken to the start of the thread (my habit is just to CTRL-click on each of those links, to get each interesting thread in a new tab). It would be more useful, at least to me, to have - either instead or as well - a link to the actual new post in the thread. Otherwise, I get taken to page 1 of a multi-page thread and it's a pain in the bum...

Hope that's useful...?

Hi Pete, there are little orange icons to the far right of each active discussion line you haven't read. They will take you to the last post or last unread post depending on the icon. You will see them after each topic in the forum view as well.

This is a new feature, so probably explains why you didn't see it before.

"Little" being the operative word; people wonder why those of us over 40 struggle wit' interweb :-)

Anyway, spotted 'em now, thanks very much for the pointer!

Cheers
Pete

PS: Still no luck with the login cookie tokens, I see....

This cookie problem so that I don't remain logged in is becoming tedious.

If I'm honest, there are a great deal of forums out there that manage to get it right, either you chose the wrong forum software or you aren't on top of the problems.

If the minor log in problems on here, which I am also having, bother you its a good thing you aren't on Audiogon. Through a toxic combination of incompetence and avarice they have just about destroyed a very useful and friendly site. I am sure they had far more time and money to devote to their "update" but it came out far worse.

Thank you Stan, I've updated some code around login security which hopefully has sorted out our login cookie problem. Can't say for sure until our host does its application pool recycling.

Let me know how it goes, Daniel

Thanks for letting me know Pete, same problem for me.

There is a fix but it requires another minor upgrade. Hope to have this completed late this week.

Sigh. Can't we just set up a News host and go back to NNTP? :-) My last company ran its customer support forums that way. Most of the customers were actually quite glad :-)

Ok, the multiple notification problem is patched temporarily until the upgrade later this week.

Something's gone wrong - all of a sudden the forum pages aren't auto-formatted to fit the reader's screen width like they were up to about 3 days ago, and on my particular screen this means that you have to constantly scroll left and right to read anything. This used to be a problem, but it was fixed quite a long time ago: I don't understand why it has suddenly reverted to its old behaviour.

Ken (et al), it might be that monster banner at the top. I'm OK with Firefox full-screen (where full-screen for me is 1600 pixels wide), but if I shrink the window then I get the same effect. The top banner has several big graphic elements - the one saying "The independent advert free blah blah blah", the sideways Upcoming one, the Free Download one, the special offer one, the vol 6 no 3 one, and finally the sideways HFC one with the ISSN on it. Full-screen for me, they free-float, with all stacked on the left except the ISSN one, which is right-justified, and there's whitespace between them. Shrink the window so the whitespace disappears, and as soon as the ISSN banner hits the others, the screen goes to pot because the poor browser has been told to render all these bloody graphic blocks in a space that it can't fit them in!

Make them smaller, chaps. Or get rid of them! They're like cushions on a bed, or salad with a steak - pointless garnish. The leftmost and rightmost ones even point to the same place!
