Hi David,

Any update on your project?

Any news? Smile

Hi Simon, Mat,

Yes, I have a pair of working prototypes in my system, and the finished cabinets are well under way.

Having played around with bass as both ported and sealed, I found that I could not live with the phase issues of the ported bass.

Unfortunately, this means that I am getting a lot less efficiency from my bass driver, which is already -3db @ 100hz in the 130L box. This has meant that I have had to drop the levels of the FR mid and trebble to around 91db using resistors. This is less than ideal, but given that I will be going active soon, it is not critical.

I have not finished tuning the crossovers, but am slowly getting it closer to ideal. The tweeter is still coming in at 17K, but I have raised the level 1 db relative to the mids (well dropped the mids more really).

On the whole, I am very pleased with what I am hearing! They are a step up from the Orators in all areas, and in some respects massively so. Interestingly, with the FR mid, and 1st ordered helper bass and treble, the timing is always very very good, even when the frequency response is very wrong. This has taken away one of the tools that I use for tuning, and makes it much harder to judge.

Their stengths are phenominal clean phase response through the mid and lower treble, great coherence, powerful dynamics, microdynamic detail, and a wicked sound stage. My tuning will be complete when I have kept all that and achieved a smoother frequency response, as I still have a little extra energy in the upper mids.

I have to say that I have not been entirely successful at my design goals, as I really wanted about 95db sensitivity and have had to settle for a lot less. However, in every other area, these things are going to meet or exceed my expectations. I think the secret to this success is that each of the drivers on their own sound fantastic, especially in the critical midrange area. The Seas Exotic tweater has the nicest midrange I have heard from a tweeter, and the field coil bass unit has incredible midrange dynamics. Another thing that has worked is having the crossovers outside the critical range ( they are at 200Hz and 17KHz), and the lovely phase response of the Supravox full range. These combine to give a clean quality to the mids and tops.

Cheers

David

Excellent David and just imagine the gains when you go active particularly with the ability to tune the bass BigGrin

Yes Simon, I have been thing of that!

I should be able to actively bring the bass efficiency up to meet the mids and treble, as well as allow an extra 3 or 6 db @ 20Hz.

Cheers

Well it has been nearly 12 months since I started this project, and I am more than half way there.

I received my finished bass boxes last week. They are a lot stronger than and better braced than my prototypes.

Here are some pictures of the inside, showing the bracing and the lead damping that I have glued in.

I have also put some lead ingots (about 8KG stuck to the bottom rear of the cabinets to counteract some of the weight of the drivers.

Here are some pictures of my room. The first is an old shot showing the Orelle Orators with the system in between.

This next one was taken tonight. I am not happy yet with the asthetics of the speakers (quite a bit more work to do), but they are sounding great.

The black boxes in the middle arethe external crossovers. I have used VDH Revelation as the main speaker cable, and it is also used throughout for the bass. For the mids I am using 1mm silver, and 0-7mm for the highs. The unit at the back is a massive power supply for energising the bass magnets. i have also found the the quality of the PSU makes a difference, as does removing the metal lids.

The head units are still prototypes, and I will need to play around a bit before coming up with a final design.

Will take some more photos and post them soon.

Cheers

David

As long as the sound is better than the pictures.....

Sorry.

Joking aside this is looking great. I hope they sound good, actually I know they will sound good. Are we seeing the start of a revolution? Liberated audiophiles, burning our baffles?

Good work. I am pleased to see the project almost finished. And thanks for continuing to share.

Hi David,

The amount of work you've put into this is self evident. Great work, thanks for sharing.

I wondered if you have put in horizontal and vertical bars between the panels or if you have just stiffened the panels.

I have a pair of JBL built 150litre cabinets (about 4.5ft3 I believe?) that are braced horizontally but not vertically. And the 15" produce so much force that even at moderate listening the mid and high on top vibrate quite a lot. As in that you can feel them vibrate, not see them move...

So I'll probably also add vertical panel bracing.
